Orangeries In Times Past
The original Orangeries were generally used to house citrus and exotic plants to protect them from the frosts during the winter period, the plants would then be moved out on to the terrace through large sets of French doors during summer months freeing up a grand ballroom to house those summer parties.
Stately Orangery
Orangeries were a must-have if you were building a grand house during the late Georgian – Victorian era. Originating from the Renaissance gardens of Italy, Orangeries featured huge classical columns, ornate porticos and tall windows; they were the ideal room for that summer ball.
Victorian Splendour
The Victorian style became much more elaborate. This great example adorns Kilworth House in Leicestershire; now Grade II listed it features a mixture of timber, steel and glass overlooking magnificent grounds.
